When a listing is created, Osello fills in its primary image and its alternate images. If the same product is already listed on another marketplace, it reuses the images from that listing. Otherwise it picks from the photos on your product, aiming for images that meet the marketplace's rules for that field, without ever choosing the same photo twice.
Images you already use on another marketplace
When the same product variant has a listing on another marketplace that has been submitted (submitting, submitted, waiting on an image approval, under review, pending publication or approved), Osello copies that listing's primary image and alternate images instead of going back to your product photos. You already got those images ready for a marketplace once, edits included.
- When several listings qualify, the most recently updated one is used.
- A listing still being drafted is never copied from.
- An image you rejected in the approvals queue (Review images on the Images page) is never copied.
- The rules below for alternate images (no repeat of the primary image, preferred angles first, the marketplace's maximum) still apply to the copied list.
The primary image
With no other listing to copy from, the choice comes from your product photos.
Osello starts with the photo your product already uses as its main image. That's your choice, so it keeps it — unless another image is clearly better: known to meet a marketplace rule your photo is known to break, and no worse on anything else. A photo Osello simply knows less about never wins the slot.
When your photo does break a rule, Osello looks for a better option in this order:
- Other versions of the same photo. If you've already cropped or edited that image, the version that meets the rules is used. Staying with the photo you picked matters more than switching to a different one.
- Your other product photos. Only when nothing based on the original works does Osello move to a different photo — and only once your primary photo (and the other photo) have been analyzed by Osello's AI. Until then Osello has nothing reliable to compare, so it sticks with your photo or one of its own versions.
If nothing is clearly better, your original photo stays. The listing's readiness check reports the image if it doesn't meet the marketplace's rules, so you can fix it rather than have a worse photo chosen for you.
Which rules matter most
Marketplaces care about some things more than others, so Osello weighs them in order:
- Which way the product faces — front-facing is the usual requirement.
- The background — often required or preferred to be white.
- The shape of the image — the aspect ratio the marketplace asks for.
A photo that faces the right way wins over one that merely has a better background. You can see which rules apply to a field on the marketplace's Fields page — open the field and read its instructions.
Shape never changes which photo is chosen. Facing and background decide which photo; the aspect ratio only decides which version of that photo — when you already have a crop of it in the right shape, the crop is used. Osello won't switch to a different product photo just because it happens to be the right shape.
Automatic cropping to the required shape
When the chosen image, copied or picked, is the wrong shape and you have no version of it in the right one, Osello crops it for you as the listing is created. The crop removes plain background only and never cuts into your product or model. If the photo has too little background to reach the shape, it is left as it is. The readiness check doesn't look at image shape, so the listing can still be submitted with it. Crop it yourself or pick another image before you submit. Swatches and size charts are never cropped automatically, since cropping one could cut off a color or a measurement.
When the image copied from another marketplace is itself a crop made for a different shape, Osello crops the photo it was made from instead, so your other edits (a whitened background, for instance) are kept.
A crop Osello made on its own waits for your approval. It appears in the approvals queue (Review images on the Images page), and the listing can't be submitted until someone on your account approves it. See approve AI-edited images before they go live.
Alternate images
The alternate images are your remaining product photos, with a few adjustments:
- The primary image is left out, along with any crop or edited version of it, so the same photo never appears twice.
- Off-shape photos are swapped for a correctly cropped version of the same photo when you already have one, and cropped automatically (background only) when you don't.
- Preferred angles come first. When a marketplace asks to lead with a back or side view, Osello moves that photo to the front of the list — preferring an alternate angle of the primary image itself.
- Customization photos are dropped when the marketplace excludes them, such as images showing monogramming or other made-to-order details.
- The list is trimmed to the maximum number of images the marketplace accepts.
Why a photo you expected wasn't chosen
Your photos hadn't been analyzed yet. Osello studies each image to learn which way the product faces and what the background looks like, and that runs in the background after images arrive. Until your primary photo has been analyzed, Osello only ever swaps in a crop or edit of that same photo — it won't weigh your other photos against it. And a photo that hasn't been analyzed can never be a better match, so your original choice stays.
Images are chosen once, when the listing is created. They aren't re-picked on their own once the analysis catches up, so if a better photo has since become available, use Update with AI on the field or pick the image yourself.
Nothing available met the rules. If none of your photos meet the marketplace's requirements, Osello keeps your primary image rather than substituting a worse one, and the listing reports the problem so you can fix it — see required fields and listing readiness.
Cropping is the only change made during this step. Your original is always kept, only plain background is removed, and the crop waits for your approval before the listing can be submitted. Whitening a background or any other edit happens separately and only when you ask for it.
Fix the primary image with AI
When a listing's primary image breaks the marketplace's background or shape rules, open the listing, find Primary Image on the Fields tab, and pick Update If Needed from its AI menu. Osello reads that field's requirements for the listing's category, including anything your store added to the field's instructions, compares them against the image, and generates a corrected copy of it.
Only two things get changed: the background, and the aspect ratio. Both go into one edit, so the image is regenerated once rather than put through two rounds. Marketplaces that want flat white get flat white; Nordstrom, which photographs on a lit studio backdrop, gets that instead.
Some images are left alone on purpose. Osello won't edit one where it can't tell which item is for sale, where the item pictured isn't what the listing sells, where more than one model appears, or where the model isn't facing forward. Rotating a model or inventing a view would misrepresent the product, so it reports what it found and changes nothing. A model wearing other clothing alongside the product is normal and doesn't stop the edit.
The chat doesn't stop to ask you about the result. Osello checks the corrected image against the field's requirements itself, saves it as a version of the original and sets it on the field. The new image then waits in the approvals queue (Review images on the Images page), and the listing can't be submitted until someone approves it there. The chat's final reply links each new image so you can open it and approve it; you can't approve it from the chat. The same goes for any image an agent edits while it works on a listing for you.
Change the images yourself
Open the listing, find Primary Image or Alternate Images on the Fields tab, and click the pencil to pick different photos. Anything you set by hand is kept — Osello never overwrites a value you chose.
For a single-image field such as Primary Image, you can skip the edit page. Open the row's actions menu (the ... button) and look under Image:
- Replace picks a different photo (Choose when the field is empty).
- Edit in AI Studio edits the current photo with AI instructions.
- Manually crop crops the current photo to the shape you drag out.
The result is saved to the field as soon as you confirm the dialog. When a variant uses its parent listing's image, change it on the parent listing instead; the menu offers a link there.
