Why a Listing Keeps Its SKU, Barcode, or Style Code

Marketplaces can't rename a listed item, so Osello freezes a listing's SKU, barcode, and style code once it's submitted — here's what that means and how to spot a mismatch.

Once a listing has been submitted, the SKU and barcode it was listed under stay put — even if you later change them on the product in your store. That's deliberate: marketplaces treat a new SKU as a brand-new item, not a rename, and the old one stays behind.

Why Osello doesn't pass the change along

Every marketplace Osello supports identifies your listed items by SKU (and, on many, by barcode). None of them let you change that identifier on an item that already exists. If Osello resubmitted a listing with the new SKU, the marketplace would create a second copy of the item and keep the old one, and the old copy can't be removed without a support ticket to the marketplace — which takes weeks and isn't guaranteed.

So Osello keeps the marketplace copy consistent instead:

  • Before the first submission, a listing mirrors its product. Fix a SKU or barcode in Shopify and the listing follows.
  • After the first submission, the listed SKU and barcode are locked to what the marketplace already has. Product changes no longer flow through, and Osello keeps sending the marketplace the values it knows.

The same applies to a listing's style code (called "Style Code" by default; your store may use another caption). Before submission it follows the product's style code, as long as the two still matched. After submission it stays as listed.

Spot a listing whose identifiers no longer match

Wherever a listing's SKU or barcode is shown — the variant page header, its Details card, and the Variants table on a listing — an amber warning icon appears next to a value that differs from the current product. Hover it to see the product's value.

You can search for either value. Searching listings or variants by the old SKU, the new SKU, or either barcode finds the same listing.

Orders still match

Marketplace orders arrive with the SKU the marketplace has on file — the listed one. Osello matches each order line to the listing and, through it, to the product, so a changed product SKU doesn't break order handling. An order carrying the product's new SKU or barcode is matched through the product to the same listing.

Change the listed value on purpose

If you really need the marketplace copy to change, edit the listing directly:

  • Listing variant: open the variant, choose Edit, and expand Advanced options to edit its SKU and Barcode.
  • Listing: open the listing, choose Edit, and expand Advanced options to edit its style code.

Before you save, keep in mind:

  • Osello does not update the marketplace's existing copy. The next submission creates a new item under the new value, and the old item stays on the marketplace until you have it removed.
  • Orders and inventory for the old item may stop matching your listing.
  • A SKU or barcode must be unique within the marketplace; Osello rejects a value another listing there already uses.
