Target+ Variation Value Field Guide

Optional field for capturing unique variations not addressed by other attributes. Use only if no structured option applies.

Variation Value is Target+'s catch-all attribute for a way an item varies that no structured option covers. It is optional, available in every category, and Target reads it only when the built-in variation options (color, size, scent, flavor, pattern and so on) do not describe how the SKUs in a style group differ. If a structured option fits, use it and leave Variation Value empty.

Rules

Rule Requirement
Required No
Categories All
Level Parent listing and each variant hold their own value
Length Up to 4,096 characters
Content The value of the variation for this SKU, as a shopper would pick it

The 4,096-character ceiling is a technical limit; Osello recommends one word or one short phrase, since the value stands in for the option label a shopper clicks on the product page. Variation Value names the value of the option, so it pairs with the attribute that names the option itself: Variation Attribute 1, Variation Attribute 2 or Variation Attribute 3.

Examples

Value Verdict Reason
Left-hand Good A hand orientation no structured option covers
Monogram A Good A personalization letter that changes per SKU
Navy Weak Color is a structured option; use it instead
Medium, blue, cotton Weak Several attributes crammed into one value

Common mistakes

  • Repeating a color or size here because it was easier than mapping the structured option. The duplicate confuses the variation grid.
  • Filling it on a standalone item that has nothing to vary against.
  • Writing the option name ("Handedness") in the value slot. The name goes in a Variation Attribute field; the value ("Left-hand") goes here.

How Osello fills this field

Osello does not fill Variation Value on its own. Target's structured options cover the color, size and other choices Osello reads from your product's option values, so the field stays blank unless you set it. The parent listing and each variant carry their own value with no fallback between them. If your products carry a custom Shopify option that Target has no structured equivalent for, point Osello at it with custom instructions or a Shopify metafield. The rest of Target's attributes are in the Target+ field directory.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Variation Value on a product that varies by color and size?

No. Color and size are structured options on Target+ and carry the variation on their own. Leave Variation Value empty unless a third way of varying has no structured option.

Is the value shared across a style group?

No. Each variant holds its own value, and the parent listing holds its own as well. The field exists to say what makes this SKU different from its siblings.

Can I leave it blank?

Yes. The field is optional in every category, and blank is the right answer whenever a structured option describes the variation.
