Variation Attribute 3 names the third and last attribute that can change between items in a Target+ variation family. Most style groups never need it, since color and size cover apparel, footwear and accessories. It exists for products that vary along a genuine third dimension, such as size type, inseam length or pack count. The field is optional and category-specific, appears only in categories that support variations, and works with the first two slots to create the variation family on the product detail page.
The earlier slots are Variation Attribute 1 and Variation Attribute 2. Each variant's value for these attributes goes in Variation Value.
The rules
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Required | No |
| Level | Parent listing (one value per style group) |
| Maximum length | 255 characters |
| Content | The name of an attribute, never a value |
Fill this slot only when slots 1 and 2 are already filled and the group still has variants that would otherwise look identical. Every variant in the group must carry a value for this attribute, and the three attributes together must make every variant unique.
To decide, ask whether two variants would share the same values for the first two attributes and still be different products. Jeans sold in Blue, waist 32, inseam 30 and Blue, waist 32, inseam 34 need Length as a third attribute. A dress sold in Regular and Petite cuts at the same size needs Size Type. If no two variants collide on the first two attributes, leave this slot empty.
Examples
| Value | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Size Type | Good | Separates Regular, Petite and Plus at the same size |
| Length | Good | Separates inseams at the same waist |
| Pack Count | Good | Separates a 2-pack from a 6-pack of the same color and size |
| Petite | Weak | A value, which belongs in Variation Value |
| Material | Weak | Not a real variation if every variant is the same fabric |
Common mistakes
- Filling slot 3 when only two attributes vary.
- Repeating an attribute already named in slot 1 or 2.
- Leaving some variants without a value for the third attribute.
How Osello fills this field
Osello treats Variation Attribute 3 as an optional parent-level text field, set once per listing for the whole style group. For a configurable Shopify product with three options, Osello's AI reads the option names and writes the third one here. Products with fewer than three options leave the slot blank, which is the correct state for most style groups. A custom instruction can rename an option for Target without changing it in Shopify.
Frequently asked questions
Is Variation Attribute 3 required on Target+?
No. It is optional, and most style groups leave it empty because color and size already make every variant unique.
Can I fill slot 3 and leave slot 2 empty?
No. The slots fill in order. Use slot 3 only when slots 1 and 2 are both in use.
Do I enter the attribute or its value?
The attribute name, such as "Size Type". The value each variant takes, such as "Petite", goes in Variation Value on that variant.
Does Target support more than three variation attributes?
No. Three is the limit. If a product line varies along more dimensions, split it into separate style groups so each fits within three.
