Variation Attribute 1 names the first attribute that changes from one item to the next inside a Target+ variation family. Target lets a style group vary along up to three attributes, and this field holds the first of them, most often Color for apparel and accessories. It is optional and category-specific, so it appears only in categories that support variations, and Target uses it to create the variation family shoppers switch between on the product detail page.
The other slots are Variation Attribute 2 and Variation Attribute 3. The value each variant takes for these attributes goes in Variation Value.
The rules
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Required | No |
| Level | Parent listing (one value per style group) |
| Maximum length | 255 characters |
| Content | The name of an attribute, never a value |
Enter the attribute's name, for example "Color", not a specific value such as "Navy". Every variant in the style group must actually differ along this attribute. Spell the attribute the same way across all of your listings so shoppers see consistent options from one style to the next.
Put the attribute a shopper picks first in slot 1. For a shirt in several colors and sizes, that is Color, with Size in slot 2. For a single-color item that varies only by size, Size takes slot 1 and the other slots stay empty.
Examples
| Value | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Good | The attribute that varies, named plainly |
| Size | Good | Correct when the style has one color and many sizes |
| Navy | Weak | A value, which belongs in Variation Value |
| Color/Size | Weak | Two attributes in one slot; use slots 1 and 2 |
| Style | Weak | Too vague for a shopper to choose from |
Common mistakes
- Filling slot 1 with a value instead of an attribute name.
- Naming an attribute that no variant in the group actually varies on.
- Spelling the same attribute differently across listings ("Color" on one style, "Shade" on another).
How Osello fills this field
Osello treats Variation Attribute 1 as an optional parent-level text field, set once per listing for the whole style group. For a configurable Shopify product, Osello's AI reads the product's option names and writes the first one here, so Color and Size options typically become "Color" in slot 1 and "Size" in slot 2. Standalone products with no options leave the field blank. A custom instruction can standardize the spelling across your catalog. See standalone vs. configurable products for how Osello decides which products have variants.
Frequently asked questions
Is Variation Attribute 1 required on Target+?
No. A standalone item with no variants does not need it. A style group with variants should have it so Target can build the variation family.
Do I enter "Color" or the color name?
Enter "Color", the attribute name. The actual color of each variant, such as "Navy", goes in Variation Value on that variant.
Can I put two attributes in one slot?
No. Each slot holds one attribute. A style that varies by color and size uses slot 1 for Color and slot 2 for Size.
Does the order of the slots matter?
Put the attribute shoppers choose first in slot 1. Color usually comes before Size, and a third attribute such as size type or length comes last.
