Target+ Primary Image Field Guide

The primary image that will appear in the listing pages for the product by default and at the topmost of the product detail pages.

The Primary Image is the first image of a Target+ listing. It appears on listing pages, in search results and at the top of the product page, and for color variations Target samples the swatch color from the center of this image, so an off-center or lifestyle shot gives the shopper a wrong swatch. It is required on every variant. Target's expectations for it are the most specific of any image field: a front view on a white background, square, at least 1200 x 1200 pixels, shot and lit a particular way.

The primary is chosen per variant. Every size of a colorway shares the same image, and each colorway has its own.

Image specifications

Requirement Value
File format JPG
Color mode RGB
Dimensions 2400 x 2400 pixels preferred; 1200 x 1200 pixels is the recommended minimum
Shape Square (1:1). Anything else is letterboxed with white bars
File size Up to 10 MB
Background White. Target also accepts light gray; Osello's field requires flat white
View Front view, product facing the camera, filling the frame with a little breathing room
Lighting Directional light from the left, fill strong enough to show detail without flattening the image, shadows kept rather than filled
Shadows Natural, following the shape of the item, soft with a little more depth at the product's edges
Retouching Minimal; clean up the product as needed
Usage rights You must hold full rights to the image

The product is shot overhead, slightly 3/4 overhead or straight on. Target describes the look as graphic and clean, modern yet warm, never fussy or overworked. Props are allowed only to show scale, kept sparse and neutral (white). The front of packaging is acceptable when it is clearly a photograph of the real package rather than a rendering.

Content rules

  • No text, logos, watermarks, borders, badges or size charts on the primary image.
  • No promotional language, no graphic content, no filler or "No Image" placeholders.
  • Keep the garment's true color at the center of the frame; that is where the swatch is sampled.
  • Center the product. Listing pages apply a vertical crop to the primary image, and an off-center product gets cut.
  • For clothing, prefer an on-model front view with the model facing forward. Laydowns are acceptable.
  • Skip customization previews (embroidery, monograms), annotated measurements, several colorways in one frame, and any color other than this variant's.
  • Do not show items that do not come with the product.
  • Lifestyle shots belong in Alternate Images, never in the primary slot.

Category-specific requirements

Category Primary image
Bags, Luggage and Accessories Handbags and backpacks: a straight-on front view of the bag
Bras and Underwear Model facing forward, no props, accessories or jewelry, posed to keep modesty while showing the design
Jewelry An overhead shot focused on the detail, aligned horizontally
Shoes, and Sports and Outdoors Shoes A single right shoe, toe facing right and heel to the left, toe box angled 30 to 45 degrees clockwise toward the camera
Swimsuits and Cover Ups Model facing forward in a natural pose. Women's swim: no removable straps, no accessories, a blue gradient background on model and white for laydowns. Men's and kids' swim: a gray background for both on-model and laydown shots

Examples

Style Primary image Verdict
Women's ribbed tank, "Sage" On model, facing forward, white background, garment centered Good
Men's trail runner Right shoe, toe right, angled toward the camera on white Good: follows the footwear rule
Leather crossbody bag Straight-on front of the bag on white Good
Women's midi dress, "Navy" Model walking through a park, three-quarter turn Weak: lifestyle scene, off-center, wrong swatch sample
Kids' rain jacket, "Yellow" All five colorways laid out in one frame Weak: multiple colors, and the swatch comes out wrong
Fleece hoodie Front view with "Free shipping!" banner across the corner Weak: text and promotional language

Common mistakes

  • A lifestyle or three-quarter shot as the primary. It fails Target's front-view requirement and misreads the swatch.
  • A portrait crop from another marketplace. Target letterboxes it with white bars.
  • Product pushed to one edge of the frame. The listing-page crop cuts it off.
  • Monogram or embroidery previews in the primary slot.
  • Borders, badges or a size chart on the image.
  • Heavy retouching, filled-in shadows or a manufactured drop shadow.

How Osello fills this field

Primary Image is a variant-level field. Variants that share the same source images, in practice every size of a colorway, share one primary, and each colorway gets its own. Osello picks from your product's images, preferring a photo that already faces the camera on a white background, and passes over images that preview customization. An image counts as ready for Target only when its background is white enough and the product faces front; a picture that fails either check is reported by the listing's readiness check. When the best photo is the wrong shape, Osello crops it to 1:1 by removing background only, and when its background is not white, Osello can make it white; both edits wait for your approval before the listing can be submitted (see approve AI-edited images and crop listing images to the required shape). If the same variant is already listed on another marketplace, that listing's primary is reused. The full logic is in how Osello chooses your listing images.

The rest of Target's requirements are in the Target+ field directory.

Frequently asked questions

What size does the Target+ primary image need to be?

At least 1200 x 1200 pixels, with 2400 x 2400 preferred, as a square JPG in RGB. A non-square image is letterboxed with white bars.

Does the background have to be pure white?

Target accepts white or light gray. Osello's field requires a flat white background, so a gray or studio backdrop is flagged and can be whitened for your approval.

Can the primary image be on a model?

Yes, and for clothing Target prefers an on-model front view with the model facing forward. Laydowns are acceptable. Swim and intimates have their own posing and background rules.

Why does the swatch color look wrong on my color variant?

Target samples the swatch from the center of the primary image. If the center shows skin, a background or a different colorway, the swatch follows it. Keep the garment's true color in the middle of the frame.

Do all sizes of a colorway share the same primary image?

Yes. Osello sets the primary once per group of variants that share source images, which for most catalogs means once per colorway, and every size of that colorway uses it.
