Material Details is Nordstrom's free-text field for material and composition information that the structured material attributes cannot hold. It is optional, set once per style group, and shown on the product page. Use it for a material that is missing from the structured option lists or for a breakdown by component, such as a shell, lining and trim that are each made of something different. For a plain "100% cotton" tee the structured Materials field and Composition Percentage already say everything, and this field stays blank.
Rules
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Required | No |
| Level | Parent listing; every colorway and size in the style group shares it |
| Length | Up to 5,000 characters |
| Use it for | A material not in the structured option lists, or a per-component breakdown |
| Leave it blank for | Common materials already covered by the structured fields |
| Never include | Size, color or care information |
| Characters | No trademark or registered symbol, smart quotes, dashes other than a plain hyphen, bullets or other typographic symbols |
| Forbidden words | Nordstrom's list of trademarked, culturally appropriative and banned terms applies; "sherpa" and "bamboo" are on it, so name the fiber instead |
Write the breakdown as component: composition, separated by semicolons. "Shell: 100% recycled polyester; Lining: 100% polyester; Trim: genuine leather" is the shape Nordstrom's team reads most easily.
Animal materials
Nordstrom does not sell animal fur or exotic skins. Python, snake, crocodile, alligator, ostrich, stingray, kangaroo and similar skins are not accepted, and neither is real fur. The skins Nordstrom does accept are cow, calf, sheep, lamb, pig, goat and water buffalo, plus shearling and calf hair.
Imitations must be labeled as imitations with the real material named: "faux fur" or "faux crocodile-embossed leather", followed by what it is actually made of ("faux crocodile-embossed leather: 100% polyurethane"). Faux fur has its own field, Faux Fur Material Composition, for the fiber content.
One composition per style group
Every item in a style group must share the same material composition. When colorways differ, for example a black version in leather and a tan version in suede, the difference goes into a Highlights bullet ("Black: leather; Tan: suede"), and Material Details holds only what is common to all of them.
Examples
| Value | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Shell: 100% recycled polyester; Lining: 100% polyester; Trim: genuine leather | Good | Per-component breakdown the structured fields cannot express |
| Upper: calf hair; Sole: rubber | Good | Calf hair is an accepted material; the components are named |
| Faux crocodile-embossed leather: 100% polyurethane | Good | Labeled as an imitation with the real material named |
| 100% cotton | Weak | Already covered by the structured Materials and Composition Percentage fields |
| Machine wash cold, tumble dry low | Weak | Care information, which belongs in the Highlights bullets |
| Genuine python | Weak | An exotic skin Nordstrom does not sell |
| Cozy sherpa lining in ivory | Weak | A forbidden word, a color, and no fiber named |
Common mistakes
- Repeating the composition that is already in the structured fields, which doubles it on the product page.
- Writing "vegan leather" without saying what it is made of. Name the material: polyurethane, cork, apple-based polyurethane blend.
- Putting a colorway-specific composition here instead of in a Highlights bullet.
- Copying a care label into the field.
- Trademarked fiber names with a trademark symbol, which is a forbidden character.
How Osello fills this field
Osello fills Material Details at the parent level, shared by every variant in the listing, and only when the source materials cannot be expressed in the structured fields: a material missing from their option lists or a breakdown by component. For common materials it leaves the field blank so nothing is duplicated. It strips size, color and care mentions, replaces forbidden words and characters, and labels imitation skins and furs as faux with the real material named. Read filling in the materials field for how the structured fields and this one work together, and the Nordstrom field directory for the rest of Nordstrom's requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is Material Details required on Nordstrom?
No. It is optional, and it stays blank whenever the structured Materials and Composition Percentage fields already describe the product.
Can I put "100% cotton" here?
Only if for some reason the structured fields cannot hold it. Otherwise it is a duplicate; use the structured fields and leave Material Details empty.
How do I describe a shell, lining and trim made of different materials?
List each component with its composition, separated by semicolons: "Shell: 100% recycled polyester; Lining: 100% polyester; Trim: genuine leather".
Does Nordstrom accept leather and exotic skins?
Nordstrom accepts cow, calf, sheep, lamb, pig, goat and water buffalo, plus shearling and calf hair. It does not sell animal fur or exotic skins such as python, crocodile, alligator, ostrich, stingray or kangaroo. Imitations must be labeled faux with the real material named.
Can the material differ by colorway?
Every item in a style group must share the same composition in this field. A colorway-specific difference goes into a Highlights bullet instead.
