Nordstrom Primary Image Field Guide

The URL for the main product image that will appear on the PDP.

The Primary Image is the main photo of an item on Nordstrom Marketplace: the first image on the product detail page and the one shoppers see in search results and category grids. It is required on every item, it is set per colorway, and Nordstrom checks it against a fixed set of photography rules before an item is approved. A primary image that faces the wrong way, sits on a lifestyle background or shows the wrong color is one of the most common reasons an item comes back with changes required.

Nordstrom wants a front-facing view of the product, on a model or as a stock shot, on a white or light background. Lifestyle photography is not accepted as the primary image; it can still appear among the alternate images.

The rules

Rule Requirement
Required Yes, on every item in every category
Level Variant, one image per colorway, shared by every size of that colorway
View Front view, product facing forward. A model in the shot faces forward too
Background White preferred. Light gray, beige, light blue and light pink are accepted. A softly lit white studio backdrop is fine
Orientation Portrait, 2:3 aspect ratio
Resolution At least 1300 x 2000 pixels; 2600 x 4000 or larger recommended
File size Up to 10 MB
Content Photographs only. No CAD renderings, illustrations, logos, text, watermarks, size charts or badges
Color Must show the colorway of the variant it is attached to

Full-length model shots are fine. Nordstrom crops on-figure images at the chin for its grids, so the product should fill the frame below that line rather than sitting in the bottom third of a tall image.

For apparel, when both exist, an on-model image beats a flat lay or a ghost mannequin.

Skip images that show customization previews (a monogram, an engraving mockup), annotated measurements, or several colorways in one frame. Those belong in the alternates, if anywhere.

Footwear

In the Shoes category the primary image is a side view facing right rather than a front view. Nordstrom wants every shoe on a listing page to point the same direction so the grid reads cleanly. Keep the background and orientation rules the same; only the angle changes.

Examples

Image Verdict Reason
Model in a navy blazer, facing the camera, white studio backdrop, 2600 x 3900 Good Front view, white background, portrait, high resolution
Ghost mannequin shot of a shirt dress on flat white, 1400 x 2100 Good Acceptable when no on-model image exists
Leather loafer, side profile pointing right, light gray background Good for Shoes Matches the footwear direction rule
Model walking through a park in the same blazer Weak Lifestyle background; use it as an alternate
Back view of a sweater with the front only in image four Weak The primary image must face forward
Flat lay showing all four colorways of a T-shirt Weak One frame, several colorways; each variant needs its own color shown
Square 2000 x 2000 crop of a dress Weak Nordstrom needs 2:3 portrait
Sneaker with a "New arrival" badge in the corner Weak Badges, text and logos are not allowed

Common mistakes

  • Using the same photo for every colorway. The primary image must visibly show the variant's color, so a black-colorway image on the red variant fails.
  • Horizontal or square crops from a Shopify theme that uses square thumbnails. Recrop to 2:3 with the product centered.
  • A pale but tinted background that Nordstrom's checks read as neither white nor one of the accepted light shades. Shoot on white or whiten the background.
  • Leading with a detail shot, a texture close-up or a back view because it looks better in your own store. The primary image is the front view; details go in the alternates.
  • Product renders instead of photographs. Even a photorealistic CAD image is rejected.
  • Shoes photographed facing left, or a mix of directions across the sizes of one colorway.

How Osello fills this field

Osello sets the primary image per colorway and shares it across every size of that colorway automatically. When a listing is created, Osello starts from the product's own main image and keeps it unless another image is clearly better against Nordstrom's rules, checking facing direction first, then background, then shape. Images that show customization are skipped. If the chosen photo is the right photo but the wrong shape, Osello crops the plain background to 2:3 and holds the crop for your approval before the listing can be submitted. When nothing on the product meets the rules, the listing's readiness check reports it rather than substituting a worse photo. The full selection logic is described in how Osello chooses your listing images, and cropping in crop listing images to the required shape.

The Nordstrom readiness checker tells you whether a Shopify product already has a usable primary image for each color.

Frequently asked questions

Does every size need its own primary image?

No. The image belongs to the colorway. Every size of a colorway shares one primary image, and each colorway in the style group needs its own image showing that color.

Can I use a lifestyle photo as the primary image?

No. Nordstrom requires a front-facing product shot on a white or light background. Lifestyle images are welcome as alternate images, where they help the shopper picture the item in use.

Is a white background mandatory?

White is preferred, and light gray, beige, light blue and light pink are accepted. A softly lit studio white counts as white. Anything darker, patterned or environmental is not accepted for the primary image.

Do shoes follow the front-facing rule?

No. In the Shoes category the primary image is a side view with the toe pointing right, so every shoe on a listing page faces the same way. The background, orientation and resolution rules are unchanged.

Can Osello fix an image that fails these rules?

Osello can crop a photo to 2:3 automatically and, on request, whiten its background or generate a corrected copy through the Primary Image field's AI menu. Anything the AI produces waits in the approvals queue until someone on your account approves it. See approve AI-edited images.
