Brand is the name of the product label as Nordstrom shows it in search filters and on the product page. It is required on every item in every category, it is set once per style group, and it is the value a shopper uses when they filter a category by brand or open a brand page on Nordstrom.com. A misspelled or inconsistent brand name splits your catalog across two filter entries and hides part of your assortment from the shopper who is looking for you.
Rules
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Required | Yes, on every item |
| Level | Parent listing; every colorway and size in the style group inherits it |
| Length | Up to 255 characters |
| Content | The label name only; no product type, collection, season or descriptor |
| Characters | No trademark symbol, no smart quotes, no dashes other than a plain hyphen, no bullets or other typographic symbols |
| Forbidden words | Nordstrom rejects a list of copyrighted terms, culturally appropriative words and a handful of common nouns that conflict with existing labels |
Spell the brand the way the label itself spells it, including capitalization and punctuation ("rag & bone", "A.P.C."). Use that exact spelling on every item you list so Nordstrom groups them under one brand.
Forbidden words
Nordstrom's forbidden list applies to the brand name as it does to copy fields. Most entries are trademarked names and phrases that belong to other companies ("xoxo", "for less", "coachella", "sundance"), a group of culturally appropriative words ("gypsy", "tribal", "aztec", "navajo", "oriental", "eskimo"), and a few plain adjectives ("girly", "feminine", "ladylike", "crazy", "insanely"). If your label's legal name contains one of them, expect the item to be rejected and talk to Nordstrom before you submit.
The same list bans a set of typographic characters. The trademark sign, smart quotes, em and en dashes, bullets, daggers and the euro sign are all rejected, so "Brand Name(TM)" and a curly apostrophe both fail. Type a straight apostrophe and drop the symbol.
Sub-brands, lines and collaborations
The brand is the label a shopper searches for. A diffusion line or a capsule collection is not a brand, so keep the parent label here and put the line in the Collection field. A collaboration between two labels usually lists under the label that owns the product and names the partner in Collection and in the copy.
Examples
| Value | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reformation | Good | The label name as the label spells it |
| rag & bone | Good | Lowercase and ampersand match the label's own styling |
| Reformation Dresses | Weak | Includes a product type; the category field already says it is a dress |
| Vince(TM) | Weak | The trademark symbol is a forbidden character |
| Nordstrom Marketplace Seller | Weak | Names the channel, not the product label |
| Levi's Premium | Weak | The line belongs in Collection; the brand is Levi's |
Common mistakes
- Filling Brand with the store name when the store sells several labels. Each product carries the label it actually belongs to.
- Two spellings of one label across a catalog ("Rag & Bone" and "rag & bone"), which produces two filter entries on Nordstrom.com.
- Appending a season, a gender or a category to the brand to make it more descriptive.
- Leaving a placeholder such as "Default" from an import, which Nordstrom treats as the brand name.
How Osello fills this field
Osello fills Brand at the parent level from your source product data (for a Shopify catalog, the product's vendor) and never lets the AI guess it. A source value of "Default", the placeholder Shopify uses when no vendor is set, is treated as empty. When every product in a store carries that placeholder and the store has a default brand name configured, Osello uses the store's default brand instead. The value is shared by every variant of the listing, and a missing brand shows up as a blocker in required fields and listing readiness until it is set.
The Nordstrom field directory lists every other field, and the Nordstrom readiness checker tells you whether a Shopify product has a usable brand before you connect.
Frequently asked questions
Is Brand required on Nordstrom Marketplace?
Yes. Every item in every category needs a brand, and Nordstrom validates it before a person reviews the item.
Can I use a trademark or registered symbol in the brand name?
No. The trademark symbol is on Nordstrom's forbidden character list, along with smart quotes, em and en dashes and bullets. Enter the plain name.
How do I list a sub-brand or diffusion line?
Enter the parent label as the brand and put the line name in the Collection field. Shoppers filter by the label they know, and the line still appears on the product page.
Does the brand vary by colorway or size?
No. Brand is set once on the parent listing and every colorway and size in the style group inherits it.
Where does Osello get the brand?
From your source product data, such as the Shopify vendor field. Osello does not generate a brand with AI; if the source has no usable value, the listing waits until you supply one or set a store default.
