Macy's Product Material Field Guide

Material that the item is made of. Provide for all parts of the item (e.g., both garment and lining for clothing). Maximum character limit of 254 characters (including spaces.) Separate multiple fabrics with backslash (/), and capitalize.

Product Material is the fiber and material content shown on a Macy's product page. Macy's asks for the material of every part of the item, garment and lining alike, in a single line of up to 254 characters including spaces, with multiple fabrics separated by a slash and each one capitalized. The field is optional in Macy's data model, but a listing without it leaves the shopper guessing what they are buying, and the regulated wording rules around leather, metals and organic claims apply to it as much as to the description.

The value is set once per style group. Macy's expects the colorways in a group to share a composition, and when they differ the field documents each one.

Format rules

Rule Requirement
Length Up to 254 characters including spaces
Order Fibers from the highest percentage to the lowest
Separator A slash between distinct fabrics: "Cotton/Polyester/Spandex"
Capitalization Every fiber capitalized
Components Name each part when the item has more than one: "Shell: 82% Polyamide, 18% Elastane; Lining: 92% Polyester, 8% Elastane"
Percentages Accurate and totaling 100% per component

When the source gives no percentages, list the fibers without inventing numbers. When the source percentages do not add up, list them as given; do not adjust them to reach 100.

Content rules

The only acceptable sources are the product data and the care label. A fiber or percentage is never guessed from the look of the fabric.

Rule Write this Never this
Faux leather "Faux Leather (PVC)", naming the material "Vegan", "Vegan Leather"
Plated or tone finishes "Gold-Tone", "Silver-Tone" "Gold", "Silver" (reserved for the real metals)
Embossed leather "Croc-Embossed Cow Leather" An exotic skin name; Macy's does not sell exotic animal skins
Calfskin Only when genuine Calfskin for a cow leather that is not calf
Organic and certified fibers "100% Certified Organic Cotton" only when the source includes the certification "Organic Cotton" without a certificate
Bamboo "Rayon from Bamboo" "Bamboo" alone

Colorways within a style group should share a composition. When they do not, document each: "Pink: 100% Cotton; Blue: 99% Cotton, 1% Spandex".

Category-specific requirement

For Kids & Baby Accessories, Product Material is not required for jewelry, watches, sunglasses or eyeglasses. Fill it only when the source states the material.

Examples

Value Verdict Reason
"Body: 83% Polyester, 17% Spandex; Waistband: 63% Nylon, 21% Polyester, 16% Spandex" Good Every component named, ordered high to low, totals 100%
"Cotton/Polyester/Spandex" Good Slash-separated and capitalized when the source gives no percentages
"Faux Leather (PVC)/Gold-Tone Hardware" Good Names the material and uses the tone wording
"vegan leather, gold buckle" Weak Banned word, "gold" for a plated finish, lowercase
"95% cotton 10% spandex" Weak Totals 105% and is not capitalized
"100% Organic Cotton" Weak Needs the certification in the source to carry "Organic"
"Soft stretchy fabric" Weak Not a fiber content

Common mistakes

  • Rounding or nudging percentages so they add to 100. List them as the source gives them.
  • Listing only the shell of a lined jacket. Macy's wants every part.
  • "Bamboo" as a fiber. The textile is rayon (or another fiber) made from bamboo, and it is written that way.
  • Copying "vegan leather" from the Shopify description into the material line.
  • Different compositions across colorways with only one documented.

How Osello fills this field

Osello treats Product Material as an optional, parent-level text field set once per style group. It fills the value from the source product's material data and care information, orders the fibers by percentage, applies the slash and capitalization format and the regulated-word substitutions, and leaves the field blank when the source states no material rather than guessing one. Values are capped at 254 characters. Material data kept on Shopify can be mapped in through Shopify metafields, and fill in the materials field covers how material fields work across Osello. The Description and Highlights fields must not repeat the percentages.

Frequently asked questions

Is Product Material required on Macy's?

No, it is optional in Macy's data model, and it is explicitly not required for kids and baby jewelry, watches, sunglasses or eyeglasses. Fill it whenever the source states the material; shoppers expect it on apparel and accessories.

How do I write an item with a lining?

Name each component and separate them with a semicolon: "Shell: 82% Polyamide, 18% Elastane; Lining: 92% Polyester, 8% Elastane". Each component's percentages total 100 on their own.

What if the source percentages do not add up to 100?

List the fibers as the source gives them and do not adjust the numbers. If the source has no percentages at all, list the fibers with none.

Can I write "vegan leather"?

No. Write "Faux Leather" and name the material in parentheses, such as "Faux Leather (PVC)". The same rule bans "gold" and "silver" for plated or tone finishes, which are written "Gold-Tone" and "Silver-Tone".

Do all colorways need the same material?

Macy's expects colorways in a style group to share a composition. When they differ, document each colorway in the same field: "Pink: 100% Cotton; Blue: 99% Cotton, 1% Spandex".
