Bloomingdale's Primary Image Field Guide

This contains Image URL

The Primary Image is the first image a shopper sees for a product on Bloomingdale's: in search results, in the category grid and at the top of the product page. It is required on every listing and is the one image Bloomingdale's holds strictly to its specification. Reviewers reject anything that does not look professionally shot and edited, so the primary is the image most likely to send a listing back.

The primary is chosen per colorway. Each color variant has its own primary showing that color, and every size of the colorway shares it.

Image specifications

Requirement Value
Dimensions 1200 x 1500 pixels, 4:5 portrait
Background 100% white (RGB 255), with the product's natural shadows and reflections kept
Color profile sRGB
File size Up to 10 MB
View Front view of the product
Content Photographs only: no illustrations, renderings, text, logos or watermarks
Model shots Cropped just below the eyes to respect model rights
Color The variant's own colorway, showing the true color the shopper receives

The white has to be flat. A softly lit studio backdrop with gray falloff does not count as white on Bloomingdale's; only the natural shadow directly under or behind the product stays.

Content rules

  • Show this variant's colorway. Skip images of other colors, and skip images that show every colorway together unless nothing else is available.
  • Prefer a model shot that is already cropped below the eyes, or one that can be cropped that way without losing the product.
  • Intimates: no nipples, no excessive cleavage, no pubic hair.
  • Avoid over-retouched images where the fabric texture is lost.
  • Skip customization previews and annotated measurement images unless nothing else qualifies. They belong in the alternates, if anywhere.

Image Verdict
Women's wrap dress in "Cobalt", front on model, cropped below the eyes, flat white Good
Boys' puffer jacket, front flat-lay on white Good: kids apparel is flat-lay
Men's dress shirt folded, collar facing camera, on white Good: the dress shirt exception
Women's pump, three-quarter product shot on white with a natural shadow Good
Women's wrap dress in "Cobalt", but the image shows the "Black" colorway Weak: wrong colorway
Men's tee on model against a light gray backdrop Weak: the background is not RGB 255 white
Men's tee, full-face model shot Weak: not cropped below the eyes
Sneaker rendered in 3D with a "New" badge Weak: a rendering, and text on the image

Common mistakes

  • Lifestyle or outdoor photography as the primary. It goes in the alternates, last.
  • A 1:1 square or a horizontal crop. The primary is 4:5 portrait at 1200 x 1500.
  • One primary reused across every colorway of a style.
  • Background removed so aggressively that the product floats without any shadow, or retouched until the knit has no texture.
  • A back view or side view chosen because it is the best photo. The primary is always the front.
  • Text overlays: size callouts, brand logos, "as seen in" badges.

How Osello fills this field

The Primary Image is a variant-level field set once per colorway and shared by every size of that colorway. Osello selects it from the source product's images, requiring a front-facing view with no slight angle allowed and a white background; a softly lit studio white does not pass because Bloomingdale's wants flat white. Images that preview customization are skipped. When the best candidate has a non-white background, Osello can make it white, and when it is not 4:5 it can be cropped to shape (see crop listing images to the required shape); edits made by the AI wait for your approval before they are used (see approve AI-edited images). The full selection logic is in how Osello chooses your listing images, and the Alternate Images field takes the images that follow.

Other Bloomingdale's requirements are in the Bloomingdale's field directory.

Frequently asked questions

What size does the Bloomingdale's primary image need to be?

1200 x 1500 pixels, a 4:5 portrait, in sRGB, with a file size of up to 10 MB.

Does the background have to be pure white?

Yes. Bloomingdale's asks for 100% white, RGB 255, with the product's natural shadows and reflections kept. A gray or off-white studio backdrop does not pass.

Should the model's face be visible?

No. Model shots are cropped just below the eyes to respect model rights, so choose an image that is already cropped that way or can be.

Is the primary the same for every colorway?

No. Each colorway carries its own primary image showing that color. All sizes of a colorway share it.

Which categories use a flat-lay instead of a model?

Kids and baby apparel is shot as a front-view flat-lay. Men's dress shirts are shot folded. Shoes use a product shot. Adult apparel otherwise uses a front view on model.
