Macy's Sizing Information Field Guide

Fits small, order one size up; Fits large, order one size down; Fits true to size, order your normal size. Max character limit of 254 characters (including spaces).

Sizing Information is the first of Macy's size-and-fit attributes, the line on the product page that tells a shopper whether to order their usual size. Macy's expects one of its own stock phrases here rather than free-form fit copy. The attribute is optional in the Macy's schema, lives at the parent level, is capped at 254 characters including spaces, and applies to the apparel categories that carry Macy's size-and-fit set.

Getting this line right matters more than its length suggests. It is the fit statement shoppers read before adding to bag, and a wrong call here turns into returns.

The accepted phrases

Macy's supplies the exact wording. Use one of these, character for character:

Phrase Use it when
Fits small, order one size up The garment runs small, is fitted, structured, non-stretch, shrunken or bodycon
Fits large, order one size down The garment runs large, is oversized, boxy, relaxed or intentionally generous
Fits true to size, order your normal size The size chart matches the brand's standard grade and there is no strong evidence either way

The default is "Fits true to size, order your normal size". Only move off it when the fit notes, the size chart or the design of the garment point clearly to one direction.

Rules

Rule Detail
Length 254 characters maximum including spaces; the stock phrases are far shorter
Content One of the three phrases above, nothing else
Exclusions No model height, no measurements, no styling advice
Apparel Do not leave it blank for apparel
Level One value per style group, shared by every colorway and size

Model height and size belong in Model's Measurements & wearing a size X. Garment length belongs in Dress Length based on size X. Where the garment is snug or relaxed by zone belongs in Bust, Hip, Waist Fit Details. Keep this attribute to the single sizing call.

Examples

Value Verdict Why
Fits true to size, order your normal size Good Exact Macy's phrase, correct default for a standard-grade knit top
Fits small, order one size up Good Right call for a rigid, non-stretch denim jacket cut close to the body
Runs a little snug, size up if between sizes Weak Rewords the Macy's phrase; the attribute wants the stock wording
Fits true to size. Model is 5'9" wearing a size S Weak Mixes in model information that has its own attribute
Oversized fit Weak Names the silhouette without telling the shopper what to order
(blank) Weak Apparel should always carry a sizing call

Common mistakes

  • Paraphrasing. "True to size" and "Order your usual size" read fine but are not Macy's phrases.
  • Marking an oversized style as "Fits large". If the garment is designed oversized and the size chart already reflects that, it fits true to size. "Fits large" is for garments that come up bigger than their labeled size.
  • Copying the fit call from a different fabrication of the same style. A non-stretch woven and a stretch knit of one silhouette can need different calls.
  • Leaving the field empty on apparel because the source had no fit notes. Default to "Fits true to size, order your normal size".

How Osello fills this field

Osello reads the source description, size notes and fabric content for fit signals (fitted, structured, non-stretch, bodycon, oversized, boxy, relaxed) and picks the matching Macy's phrase, falling back to "Fits true to size, order your normal size" when nothing pushes the call in either direction. The value is set once on the parent listing and shared by every variant. Values that stray from the stock phrases or exceed 254 characters are flagged in the listing before you submit. Brand-level fit knowledge ("all our denim runs small") is best given as custom instructions so the call is consistent across the catalog.

Other Macy's attributes are listed in the Macy's field directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write my own fit sentence instead of the stock phrase?

No. Macy's supplies the three phrases and expects one of them verbatim. Additional fit detail goes in the other size-and-fit attributes, such as Bust, Hip, Waist Fit Details.

Which phrase do I use when I have no fit data at all?

"Fits true to size, order your normal size". It is the neutral default, and it is better than leaving apparel without a sizing call.

Does this attribute vary by size or color?

No. It sits on the parent listing and every colorway and size shares it. If a Plus or Petite version fits differently, that version is its own Macy's grouping and gets its own value.

Is Sizing Information required?

Macy's marks it optional in the schema, but the size-and-fit set is expected on apparel and the attribute shows on the product page. Treat it as required for clothing.
