# Target+ Variation Attribute 2 Field Guide

> Contains attribute to be used to create a variation. This is two of three variation attributes.

**Variation Attribute 2** names the second attribute that changes between items in a Target+ variation family. Target supports up to three variation attributes per style group, and this slot usually holds Size for apparel, footwear and accessories that also vary by color. It is optional and category-specific, appears only in categories that support variations, and Target uses it with the other slots to create the variation family shoppers switch between on the product detail page.

The first slot is [Variation Attribute 1](/marketplaces/target/fields/variation-attribute-1) and the third is [Variation Attribute 3](/marketplaces/target/fields/variation-attribute-3). Each variant's actual value for these attributes goes in [Variation Value](/marketplaces/target/fields/variation-value).

## The rules

| Rule | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Required | No |
| Level | Parent listing (one value per style group) |
| Maximum length | 255 characters |
| Content | The name of an attribute, never a value |

Fill this slot only when Variation Attribute 1 is already filled and the style group varies along a second attribute. Enter the attribute name, such as "Size", not a value such as "Medium". Every variant in the group needs a value for this attribute so that no two variants look identical to Target.

| Style group | Slot 1 | Slot 2 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| T-shirt in several colors and sizes | Color | Size |
| Jeans in one wash, several waists and lengths | Waist | Length |
| Single-color belt in several sizes | Size | (empty) |

## Examples

| Value | Verdict | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Size | Good | The second attribute that varies |
| Length | Good | Correct for bottoms sold by waist and length |
| Medium | Weak | A value, which belongs in Variation Value |
| Size (S-XL) | Weak | Adds a value range to an attribute name |
| Color | Weak | Duplicates slot 1 when Color is already there |

## Common mistakes

- Filling slot 2 while slot 1 is empty.
- Repeating the attribute already named in slot 1.
- Using slot 2 for an attribute that only some variants have a value for.

## How Osello fills this field

Osello treats Variation Attribute 2 as an optional parent-level text field, set once per listing for the whole style group. For a configurable Shopify product, Osello's AI reads the option names and writes the second one here, so Color and Size options typically become "Color" in slot 1 and "Size" in slot 2. Products with a single option, or none, leave this slot blank. A [custom instruction](/help/ai-prompts/custom-instructions) can standardize how attribute names are spelled across the catalog.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Variation Attribute 2 required on Target+?

No. It is optional and only needed when the style group varies along a second attribute after the one in Variation Attribute 1.

### Do I enter "Size" or the size itself?

Enter "Size". The size of each variant, such as "Medium", goes in Variation Value on that variant.

### Can slot 2 be filled while slot 1 is empty?

No. Fill the slots in order. A style group with one varying attribute uses slot 1 only.

### Does every variant need a value for this attribute?

Yes. Each variant in the group needs a value for the attribute in slot 2 so the variation family is complete.
