# Nordstrom Title Field Guide

> Title of the product as it will appear on the website

The **Title** is the product name that appears at the top of every Nordstrom.com product detail page and in search and category results. It is required on every item, it is set once for the whole style group, and it never changes when a shopper switches color or size. Nordstrom has a specific recipe for it and validates titles automatically before an item reaches a reviewer, so a title that carries a color, a brand name or an abbreviation is an easy way to get a style sent back with changes required.

The recipe: size group + 2 to 5 descriptive attributes + product type. "Kids' Organic Cotton Cable Knit Cardigan" has the size group (Kids'), attributes (Organic Cotton Cable Knit) and the product type (Cardigan). A women's regular-size style drops the size group: "Puff Sleeve Tiered Party Dress".

## Format rules

| Rule | Requirement |
| --- | --- |
| Required | Yes |
| Level | Parent listing; every variant in the style group shares the exact same title |
| Length | Ideally under 50 characters. Never over 100: Nordstrom truncates longer titles online. Osello stops accepting a value at 255 |
| Capitalization | Capitalize the first letter of each word. No ALL CAPS and no all lowercase |
| Characters | No special characters, curly quotes, dashes or symbols. No abbreviations |
| Product type | Always name it: shirt, pant, sandal, tank, sneaker, jeans. "Chambray Button-Up" fails; "Chambray Button-Up Shirt" passes |
| Uniqueness | No two style groups may share a title |

## Content that never belongs in a title

| Leave out | Reason |
| --- | --- |
| Colors and patterns | The Color Description field carries them, and the title is shared across every colorway |
| The brand name | The Brand field carries it |
| Sizes | Except for beauty or home products where the size is what tells items apart |
| Gender | Except when the same product is sold in different genders and they must be told apart. Then use "Gender Inclusive" for unisex, never "Unisex" |
| Material or fabrication | Except when it is a real selling point: cashmere, silk, diamond, gold |
| Promotional language | "Limited edition", "exclusive", "must-have" and keyword stuffing of any kind |

Nordstrom also blocks a list of words in titles. Some are trademarked or restricted terms that show up in everyday fashion vocabulary ("sherpa", "bamboo", "onesie", "weekender", "coquette", "lush"), some are culturally insensitive descriptors ("tribe", "gypsy", "oriental", "ethnic", "aztec", "navajo", "eskimo", "urban", "turban"), and the rest are slurs, profanity and other brands' names. Osello's Nordstrom title field rejects all of them, so a source title containing one is rewritten with an allowed alternative ("faux shearling" for "sherpa", "bodysuit" for "onesie").

## Size types in the title

Nordstrom groups kids' sizes under one word at the front of the title and lists adult size types at the end.

| Style group includes | Title pattern | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Toddler, Little Kid, Big Kid, or any mix of them | Starts with "Kids'" | "Kids' Puff Sleeve Tiered Party Dress" |
| Baby sizes | Starts with "Baby" | "Baby Ribbed Waist Cotton Romper" |
| Size types other than Regular (Petite, Plus, Tall, Maternity) | The size types actually offered, in parentheses at the end | "Slim Fit Flare Leg Pants (Regular & Petite)" |
| Regular only | No size type | "Slim Fit Flare Leg Pants" |

Toddler, Little Kid and Big Kid must never appear anywhere in a title, not in parentheses and not spelled out in the body. Consolidate them under "Kids'". List only the size types the style group really offers; a style sold in Regular alone gets no parentheses.

## Examples

| Title | Verdict | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "Kids' Organic Mock Neck Flounce Hem Sweater Dress" | Good | Size group, attributes, product type |
| "Chambray Button-Up Shirt" | Good | Names the product type; under 50 characters |
| "Slim Fit Flare Leg Pants (Regular & Petite)" | Good | Adult size types offered, in parentheses |
| "Navy Chambray Button-Up Shirt" | Weak | Color belongs in Color Description |
| "Acme Chambray Button-Up Shirt" | Weak | Brand name belongs in the Brand field |
| "Chambray Button-Up" | Weak | No product type |
| "CHAMBRAY BUTTON-UP SHIRT" | Weak | ALL CAPS |
| "Chambray Button-Up Shirt (Toddler, Little Kid & Big Kid)" | Weak | Kids' size types never appear; use "Kids' Chambray Button-Up Shirt" |
| "Must-Have Exclusive Ltd Edition Cashmere Crewneck Sweater" | Weak | Promotional words and an abbreviation |
| "Women's Chambray Button-Up Shirt" | Weak | Gender only when it tells genders of the same product apart |

## Duplicate titles across styles

Two style groups may not share a title. When two styles collapse to the same title after you strip color and brand, add a material, a feature or a fit: "Chambray Button-Up Shirt" and "Chambray Button-Up Linen Shirt". A color or a season name is not a valid differentiator.

## Common mistakes

- Carrying a Shopify title straight across. Most Shopify titles include the brand, a color or a gender that Nordstrom rejects.
- Rewriting the title per colorway. Titles are static on the product page, so the same value has to be right for every color.
- Trailing size types on a regular-only style, or listing every size type the brand makes instead of the ones this style offers.
- Abbreviations from a line sheet: "SS" for short sleeve, "LS", "Ltd", "W/" and similar.

## How Osello fills this field

Osello sets the title on the parent listing and keeps every variant on the parent value, so one edit covers the whole style group. When a listing is created, Osello's AI starts from the source product title, keeps as much of the wording as fits, and rewrites it to Nordstrom's recipe: it removes color, brand, size and gender, checks that a product type is present, applies the Kids' and Baby prefixes and size-type parentheses from the style's actual size types, fixes capitalization, and swaps out blocked words and characters. Titles over 100 characters are shortened. Edit the result on the listing's Fields tab, or shape future titles with [custom instructions](/help/ai-prompts/custom-instructions). The [Nordstrom field directory](/marketplaces/nordstrom/fields) covers the fields that carry what the title leaves out, such as [Description](/marketplaces/nordstrom/fields/description) and [Highlights](/marketplaces/nordstrom/fields/highlights).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the color go in the Nordstrom title?

No. The title is shared by every colorway in the style group and stays fixed on the product page when the shopper switches color. The colorway name belongs in the Color Description field.

### How long can a Nordstrom title be?

Aim for under 50 characters. Nordstrom truncates anything over 100 characters online, so the tail of a long title is never seen.

### How do I title a style sold in toddler and big kid sizes?

Start the title with "Kids'" and never spell out the kids' size types: "Kids' Cable Knit Cardigan". Baby styles start with "Baby" instead.

### Can two styles have the same title?

No. Add a material, feature or fit to tell them apart, such as "Chambray Button-Up Shirt" and "Chambray Button-Up Linen Shirt". Color or season are not acceptable differentiators.
