# Macy's Swatch Image Field Guide

> Swatch image to use as the color/pattern button for customers on the product detail page and collections.

The **Swatch Image** is the small square a shopper clicks to switch colors on a Macy's product page, and the color button that appears on collection pages. Macy's wants one per colorway, pattern or texture, and the field is optional only in the sense that Macy's may generate a swatch from the imagery when you send none. A swatch you control shows the true fabric; a generated one is a guess made from a photo.

The swatch is set per colorway and shared by every size of that color. Each colorway in the style group needs its own.

## Image requirements

| Rule | Requirement |
| --- | --- |
| Size | 400 x 400 pixels, square |
| Format | JPEG |
| Hosting | Publicly viewable URL of up to 255 characters |
| File size | Up to 10 MB |
| Content | The fabric, pattern or texture of this colorway; for solid matte colors a plain color block is acceptable |
| Match | Must agree with the NRF color code and the product images for the variant |

Prints, textures and finishes need a crop of the actual product; a color block cannot show a stripe, a herringbone or a metallic sheen. For multipacks and reversible items, show at least one of the colors and make sure it represents this variation.

## Choosing the swatch

Use the swatch from your source data when one exists. Otherwise take a tight crop of a representative area of a product photo, enough fabric to show the pattern repeat and none of the seams, labels or background. For a solid, matte fabric a generated color block in the exact shade is fine. When no swatch or suitable crop exists, leave the field blank and let Macy's produce one from the imagery.

## Examples

| Swatch | Verdict | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 400 x 400 crop of the plaid from the shirt's laydown photo | Good | Shows the pattern at the right scale and matches the colorway |
| Flat navy color block for a matte navy tee | Good | Solid matte colors may use a block |
| Crop of the product photo that includes the collar seam and white background | Weak | The swatch should be fabric, not a piece of the product outline |
| Navy block for a heathered navy fleece | Weak | Textures need a crop of the actual fabric |
| The primary image scaled down to 400 x 400 | Weak | A full product shot is not a swatch |
| A single swatch reused for all colorways | Weak | Each colorway needs one that matches its own color code and photos |

## Common mistakes

- Sending a rectangular crop. The swatch is square.
- A swatch that disagrees with the NRF color code on the variant, so the button shows one blue and the photos another.
- Crops taken from a shadowed or backlit part of the photo, which read darker than the product.
- Uploading a PNG or a file hosted behind a login; Macy's needs a public JPEG.

## How Osello fills this field

Osello treats the Swatch Image as an optional, variant-level field set once per colorway and shared by every size of that color. It selects the image asset that best represents the colorway from your product images, preferring a supplied swatch and skipping images that preview a customization, and leaves the field empty when no suitable image exists so Macy's can generate one. Swatch and product images live in the same image library; see [managing product images](/help/products/managing-product-images) and [how Osello chooses your listing images](/help/channels-listings/how-osello-chooses-your-listing-images). The color the swatch must match is carried by the variant's NRF color code, and the photos it must agree with are the [Primary Image](/marketplaces/macys/fields/featured-image) and [Alternate Images](/marketplaces/macys/fields/alternate-images).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a swatch image required on Macy's?

No. Macy's asks for one per colorway but may generate a swatch from the product imagery when none is sent. A supplied swatch gives you control over how the color button looks.

### What size and format does the swatch need to be?

400 x 400 pixels, JPEG, hosted at a publicly viewable URL. Osello handles the hosting once the image is in your library.

### Can I use a plain color block instead of a photo crop?

For solid, matte colors, yes. Prints, textures and finishes such as metallics need a crop of the actual product so the button shows what the fabric looks like.

### Do all sizes of a color share one swatch?

Yes. The swatch is set per colorway and every size of that color uses it. Each colorway in the style group has its own.

### What should the swatch show for a multipack or reversible item?

At least one of the colors in that variation, chosen so it represents the variation being sold. It still needs to match the variant's NRF color code and photos.
