# Macy's Description Field Guide

> The copy that appears on the Macys.com product page. Long Description/Romance Copy must be an editorial statement about the product, not just the brand name. 1000 character maximum (including spaces).

The **Description** is the romance copy on a Macys.com product page: one editorial paragraph that tells a shopper how the product looks, feels and wears. Macy's requires it on every listing and caps it at 1,000 characters including spaces. Macy's also insists it be an editorial statement about the product. A bare brand name, a specification list or a copied bullet block will not pass.

The description is set once per style group and shown for every color and size on the page, so it describes the style, never one colorway.

## Format rules

| Rule | Requirement |
| --- | --- |
| Length | Up to 1,000 characters including spaces. Osello's target is 1 to 3 sentences, about 75 words, and it rejects anything under 65 characters |
| Shape | One continuous paragraph |
| Not allowed | Bullets, line breaks, labels such as "Material:" or "Fit:", colons, attribute lists |
| Casing | Sentence case; no all caps and no all lowercase |
| Characters | No special characters, emojis or HTML |

Specifications become sentences. "Material: 100% cotton" turns into "Crafted from soft cotton", and "Closure: button" into "Finished with a button-front closure".

## Content

Write about design, feel and use: the silhouette and fit, the fabric and how it feels on, the details that make the style what it is, and where the shopper would wear it. Answer the questions someone asks before adding to bag. Honest, benefit-led wording is the goal, and a precise description returns fewer orders than a flattering one.

When the source product already has a description, rewrite it into this shape. When it has none, build the paragraph from the other attributes and the photos.

Because the copy is shared across the style group, do not name a specific color, size or wash. "Available in several washes" is fine; "this indigo wash" is not.

## Content that must stay out

| Leave out | Reason |
| --- | --- |
| Price, shipping, inventory or stock | Handled elsewhere on the page and changes over time |
| Company history and "our best-selling" style claims | Not about the product |
| Directions to other websites | Not permitted on Macys.com |
| Repeated keywords | Macy's follows Google's rules; stuffing hurts ranking |
| "Organic", recycled or certified-fiber claims without a certification | Unsubstantiated sustainability or compliance claims |
| "Vegan" | Write "faux leather" and name the material, such as PVC |
| "Gold" or "silver" for plated or tone finishes | Use "gold-tone" and "silver-tone"; the plain words are for real gold and silver |
| Exotic animal skins | Macy's does not sell them |
| An unqualified "Made in USA" | Only when the product is entirely made in the USA |

## Examples

| Description | Verdict | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| "Cut in a relaxed silhouette from brushed cotton twill, this shirt jacket layers over a tee for cool mornings and buttons up when the wind picks up. Two chest pockets keep essentials close, and the dropped shoulder gives it an easy, lived-in feel." | Good | One paragraph, silhouette, fabric, details and use, no colors or sizes |
| "Material: 100% cotton. Fit: relaxed. Pockets: 2. Closure: buttons." | Weak | An attribute list with labels and colons |
| "Northline Apparel" | Weak | Just the brand name |
| "Our best-selling jacket, now $20 off, ships free. Visit northline.com for more." | Weak | Price, shipping, a "best-selling" claim and a link to another site |
| "This olive jacket in size medium pairs with dark denim." | Weak | Names a color and a size, which vary within the style group |
| "Vegan leather trim and gold hardware finish the look." | Weak | "Vegan" is not allowed, and "gold" needs to be "gold-tone" unless it is real gold |

## Common mistakes

- Pasting the Shopify description with its bullets and headings intact. Macy's wants a single paragraph with no line breaks.
- Leading with the brand story instead of the garment.
- Describing the colorway in the photo. The copy runs across every color of the style.
- Repeating the category name several times for search. Macy's ranking follows Google's rules and penalizes it.
- Sustainability adjectives ("eco-friendly", "organic") with no certificate in the source data.

## How Osello fills this field

Osello treats the Description as a required, parent-level field written once per style group. When the source product has a description, Osello rewrites it into one paragraph that meets the rules above, stripping HTML, bullets and labels; when it has none, it writes the paragraph from the product's other attributes and its images. The result must land between 65 and 1,000 characters, avoids color, size and wash references so it holds for every variant, and carries a confidence score you can review before submitting. See [how Osello AI fills listing fields](/help/ai-prompts/how-osello-ai-fills-listing-fields) and [confidence scores explained](/help/ai-prompts/confidence-scores-explained). To change the voice for your brand, add [custom instructions](/help/ai-prompts/custom-instructions) on the field. Fabric percentages and care belong in [Product Material](/marketplaces/macys/fields/fabric-content), and the feature list belongs in [Highlights](/marketplaces/macys/fields/highlights).

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a Macy's product description be?

Macy's hard limit is 1,000 characters including spaces. A good description is 1 to 3 sentences, about 75 words. Osello rejects anything under 65 characters because that is too short to be an editorial statement.

### Can the description mention the color or size?

No. The description is shared by every color and size in the style group, so it cannot name a specific color, size or wash. You may refer to the options broadly, for example "available in several washes".

### Can I use bullet points or HTML in the description?

No. Macy's wants one continuous paragraph with no bullets, line breaks, labels, colons or HTML. Bullet-style content belongs in the Highlights field.

### Is "vegan leather" allowed in Macy's copy?

No. Write "faux leather" and name the material, such as PVC or polyurethane. The same rule applies to "gold" and "silver", which are reserved for the real metals; plated or tone finishes are "gold-tone" and "silver-tone".

### Where do fabric content and care instructions go?

In their own fields. The description talks about how the fabric feels and wears; the composition percentages go in Product Material and care goes in the care field.
