# Bloomingdale's Product Material Field Guide

> Material that the item is made of. Provide for all parts of the item (e.g., both garment and lining for clothing). Maximum character limit of 254 characters (including spaces.) Separate multiple fabrics with backslash (/), and capitalize.
You must fill out this field to include the percentage of each material, if that information is available in the source data. It's perfectly fine if the % material composition values from the source don't add up to 100%.

**Product Material** is the fiber content Bloomingdale's shows on the product page: what every part of the item is made of, with percentages when you have them. It is set once per style group, is limited to 254 characters including spaces, and is optional in Bloomingdale's taxonomy. Fill it anyway. It is what the shopper reads when deciding whether a sweater will itch, and it takes the fabric content out of the [Description](/marketplaces/bloomingdales/fields/description), where Bloomingdale's asks you not to repeat it.

## The rules

| Rule | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Required | No |
| Level | Parent (one value per style group) |
| Maximum length | 254 characters including spaces |
| Parts | Every part of the item: shell and lining for clothing, upper and sole for shoes |
| Percentages | Include the percentage of each material when the source data has it |
| Separator | A slash (/) between materials |
| Capitalization | Capitalize each material |

Percentages do not have to add up to 100. If your source lists "95% Cotton / 5% Spandex" for the body and only "Polyester" for the lining, send exactly that.

## Regulated fiber language

Bloomingdale's applies FTC labeling rules and its own policy to fiber statements wherever they appear, and this field is where most of them land.

| Claim | Write it as |
| --- | --- |
| Faux fur | Disclose the fiber: "Faux Fur: Polyester" |
| Faux leather | Name the material: "Faux Leather: Polyurethane" |
| Vegan | Only when the source substantiates it, and still with the fiber: "Vegan Leather, 100% PVC" |
| Bamboo | "[fiber] from bamboo", for example "Rayon from Bamboo", never "Bamboo" alone |
| Cotton-rich | Cannot stand alone; list the fabrics highest to lowest |
| Egyptian cotton | Only with vendor substantiation |
| Recycled content | State the percentage by weight: "Cotton/Polyester (30% Recycled)" |
| Down | 75% or more down clusters is "Down" (or "Duck Down", "Goose Down"); 50 to 74% is "Down and Feathers" with the percentage; 5 to 49% is "Feathers and Down"; under 5% is "Feathers". Never "100% Down", "All Down" or "Pure Down". Say "down alternative", never "synthetic down" |
| Real fur | Not accepted on Bloomingdale's |

## Examples

| Value | Verdict |
| --- | --- |
| 100% Cotton | Good |
| 95% Cotton / 5% Spandex | Good |
| Shell: 100% Polyester / Lining: 100% Polyester / Fill: 80% Duck Down, 20% Feathers | Good: every part, down within the 75%+ rule |
| Faux Leather: Polyurethane / Lining: 100% Polyester | Good: the faux leather material is named |
| Upper: Leather / Sole: Rubber | Good for shoes when no percentages exist in the source |
| cotton blend | Weak: not capitalized, no percentages, and "blend" hides the fibers |
| Bamboo | Weak: must be "Rayon from Bamboo" or the actual fiber |
| 100% Down | Weak: wording Bloomingdale's does not accept |
| Soft, breathable Egyptian cotton you will love | Weak: marketing copy and an unsubstantiated claim |

## Common mistakes

- Sending only the shell. Bloomingdale's asks for the lining and every other part too.
- Commas or "and" between fibers instead of a slash.
- Lowercase fibers copied from a supplier sheet.
- Fabric copy that repeats the description's marketing language. This field is a composition, not a paragraph.
- A single value for a style whose colorways use different fabrics. Product Material is set on the parent, so a style with different fabrications per colorway needs each fabrication listed as its own style.

## How Osello fills this field

Product Material is a parent-level text field, so Osello sets one value per style group and every colorway and size shares it. The AI reads the fiber content from your product data, including Shopify metafields when you map them (see [using Shopify metafields](/help/products/using-shopify-metafields)), and writes it in Bloomingdale's format: each part, capitalized, slash-separated, with percentages when the source has them. When the source gives no composition, the field is left blank rather than guessed. The general approach is described in [fill in the materials field](/help/channels-listings/fill-in-the-materials-field).

Other Bloomingdale's requirements are listed in the [Bloomingdale's field directory](/marketplaces/bloomingdales/fields).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Product Material required on Bloomingdale's?

Not in Bloomingdale's taxonomy, but the description is not supposed to repeat the fabric content, so this field is the only place the shopper sees it. Fill it whenever the composition is known.

### Do the percentages need to add up to 100?

No. Send what the source data gives you, even when the parts listed do not total 100 percent.

### How do I separate multiple fabrics?

With a slash: "95% Cotton / 5% Spandex". Capitalize each material.

### Can the material differ between colorways?

Not within one style group. The field is set on the parent listing, so a colorway with a different fabrication is listed as a separate style on Bloomingdale's.

### Can I write "vegan leather"?

Only when the source product substantiates the vegan claim, and the fiber still has to be named, for example "Vegan Leather, 100% PVC". Without substantiation use "Faux Leather: Polyurethane" or whichever material it is.
