# Crop Listing Images to the Required Shape

> How auto crop trims a listing image to the aspect ratio a marketplace requires by removing background only, and what happens when a photo has too little of it.

When a marketplace requires a shape for an image field (1:1, 4:5 or 2:3), auto crop trims your photo to that shape by removing plain background and nothing else. It never cuts into your product or model, never stretches, pads or enlarges the photo, and your original stays in your image library.

## Crop one image field

1. Open the listing, go to the variant whose image you want to crop, and open its **Fields** tab.
2. On **Primary Image** or **Alternate Images**, open the **...** menu and choose **Crop to 4:5 Ratio** (the ratio shown is the one the marketplace requires for that field).
3. Confirm. The crop runs in the background and the field switches to the cropped image when it finishes. If the image has too little background, the field keeps the image it had.

The menu entry appears only when the field has an image and the marketplace requires a shape for it.

## Crop many listings at once

On the **Listings** page, select the listings, open the mass actions bar and choose **Auto Crop Images**. Every image field with a required shape is cropped on each selected listing.

## How the crop is chosen

A photo that is too tall loses rows from the top and bottom. A photo that is too wide loses columns from the left and right. Osello measures how much plain background sits along each of those edges: a white sweep, a solid or nearly solid color, a studio backdrop with uneven lighting.

- **Background on both edges.** The same amount comes off each one, so your subject keeps the position the photographer gave it.
- **One edge runs out of background.** The trim is equal until that edge reaches the subject, and the rest comes off the other edge. A model whose head is near the top of the frame keeps their head, and the extra comes off the floor below them.
- **Too little background to reach the shape.** The image is left as it is. Auto crop will not cut into your product or model to make the shape fit.

A light shadow your subject casts on a studio or white backdrop counts as background, so the shadow beside a model's feet doesn't stop the crop. Busy photos with no plain background on either edge (a lifestyle shot outdoors, a close-up that fills the frame) are left as they are.

Expect auto crop to handle the photos that were framed with room to spare, and to leave the tightly framed ones to you.

## When auto crop isn't the right tool

When auto crop leaves an image unchanged, crop the image by hand and choose what to give up, or use **Fit to Aspect Ratio** on the image to extend its background instead. See [managing product images](/help/products/managing-product-images).
